May Flutterbies, Part 1

Sunday, May 1st, 2011

Hey Flutterbies fans, welcome to our May newsletter!

Better Than a Tour, It’s a Webcast

First and foremost, thank you to all of you who’ve download our new single, "First Rain of October." We hope you’re enjoying the song!

Due to unforeseen circumstances, we had to cancel the East Coast tour we’d booked to promote the single. We’re sad to miss our encore show at Cooldog Concerts in Delaware, and our performance in New York’s Central Park (though we hear from "Shakespeare’s Birthday" producer Melinda Hall that the event we’d have been part of was smashing).

And now, the good news: Instead of touring, we’re webcasting! We’ve booked a hometown show at one of our favorite venues, and our set will be webcast live. Here are full details:

Tuesday May 10 at 9:00 PM
Genghis Cohen
740 North Fairfax Ave. in Hollywood, CA
$8 cover
All ages

We’ll be doing an acoustic set, with special guest Marty Rifkin (Bruce Springsteen, Keith Urban) sitting in on pedal steel. We love playing with Marty, and we’re thrilled to be webcasting this gig so you can be blown away by him too…

WATCH US ONLINE AT: www.amaralproductions.com
*The show will be webcast in real time, and also archived for streaming at your leisure.

Hope to see you there, or be seen by you online!

Cody

Last month, Maureen and Jef Scott (The Ghostwriters, Tori Amos, Jim Carroll) backed up her voice/songwriting student Cody La Scala at the Elizabeth Taylor Foundation AIDS Benefit at Aqua Lounge in Beverly Hills, CA. Cody, 24 years old and confined to a wheelchair with cerebral palsy, was incredibly inspirational performing his original tune "I Miss You." He received a standing ovation, and phone numbers from several models.

Cody La Scala

Cody’s mother Lynette La Scala runs the NAPA Center for individuals with neurological conditions. Please check out their website here.

Phlutterbies Pheature

Maureen was recently interviewed for a hot music blog called The Peverett Phile. In the interview, she reveals a shocking photo, her Broadway background, how Bonnie Raitt and Karen Black inspired her and her secret to singing. Click here to read and enjoy! And feel free to leave a comment at the blog…

Part 2, Preview

Finally, our next single will be out in a couple weeks. You’ll never believe which classic heavy metal song we’ve broken in, Flutterbies-style! Stay tuned.

The Flutterbies newsletter June 2010

Tuesday, June 8th, 2010

Hey Gang! Our Cooldog East Coast Tour was a hoot and a holler 🙂  We’re editing videos and live audio for your enjoyment and a collectible CD.  We will have links at www.theflutterbies.com very soon….

GIGS:

TUESDAY JUNE 15TH – 9:15PM
THE STRONGHOLD

1623 Abbott Kinney Blvd – Full band electric set with Maureen Davis, Adam Daniel, Christopher Allis, Steve Whalen and special guest Marty Rifkin on pedal steel
We’ll be opening for the incredible Chris Joyner (a sometimes Flutterby as well!)
Full gig info is always posted and current at our website’s Shows page.

HIGHLIGHTS FROM THE COOLDOG TOUR:

National Underground in NYC — we bookended our tour with 2 performances at Gavin Degraw’s main room on Houston Street in the infamous East Village.  The first night our pal Heidi brought the cast of Broadway’s “Mama Mia”!  The last night, we took the Double Happiness bus (that just sounds nasty) from Delaware to NYC, Oliva Restaurant manager Ramon gave me homemade Mama Juana (rum & honey) to warm my voice and we closed out our tour with college buddies in tow. I ended up roaming the East Village until 3AM,  got stuck in Tomkins Square Park and had to hop a five foot fence in dress/cowboy boots.  Yeah — I’m badass.  Hee.

The Delaware Friends of Folk Memorial Singer Songwriter Circle – Dover, DE — glorious chapel benefit concert at Wesely College – stained glass and vaulted ceilings carried the sound up and away… Adam played killed on a solo of “hallelujah” on grand piano — it was a church, right?

Cooldog Concert – Smyrna, DE — the gig that inspired the tour!  Paul Gumerman booked us at Cooldog and hooked us up with Helen Downing from Group E who planned the rest of the tour. Dan Navarro was in town, so we invited him to play too!  SRO house, killer BBQ, Nothin’ But Trouble Band backing us and those awesome dancing dogs — not to mention a duet w/Dan Navarro on “We Belong”. Who could ask for more?  You can buy a live concert CD of both our sets for $20 by writing maureen@theflutterbies.com

The Flutterbies with Dan Navarro

The Flutterbies at Cooldog

Bike Night @ Trader Lee’s in Ocean City, MD – Bourbon with bikers and a Classic Rock jam session where we joined in on Metallica, Starship & Zeppelin songs. Special thanks to Ocean 98.1 (www.irieradio.com) for the awesome 1 -hour interview & airplay/video streaming — We love DJ B.K.!

MANY MANY THANKS TO:  other wonderful tour nightclubs Frazier’s and the sweet, homey, Golden Fleece; George Dash & Tom Moran for posters/postcards and hospitality; Melinda Hall for lodging and concierge; Helen Downing @ Group E for keepin’ us busy and Paul Gumerman & son Tai at Cooldog Camp for Wayward Musicians for hosting The Flutterbies an entire week.

PRESS:

Ol’ Skool Rods, May 2010 lauds “…It is true what they say about lead singer Maureen Davis’ voice — smooth as glass and just as sharp…whose expansive vocal range and oil-well depth truly brings the always thoughtful, often poignant lyrics to a steaming, blistery boil. Davis can belt out a sultry sadness or rage that leaves one’s soul black and bluesy….” (By the way, our CD cover artist Jim Owens has a regular feature called “Rodz Noir” in this retro mag.  Dig it!)

Craig Horleman @ the Deleware State News gave us a great full-page feature writeup! Click here to read it.

See you at Stronghold June 15th!

Heartache and Sex: The Flutterbies March Newsletter

Sunday, March 7th, 2010

Hey, y’all! Welcome to The Flutterbies March newsletter. Keywords this month: heartache and sex.

Joonbug

This month The Flutterbies are featured at Joonbug, the ‘net’s coolest new nightlife/culture website. Kareem Anderson interviewed Maureen and wrote a stellar review of our EP The Flutterbies featuring Maureen Davis. Here’s a snippet:

…the Flutterbies sound can best be described as Bonnie Raitt on a blind date with Beck while being served a shot of Southern Comfort by Janis Joplin in a Louisiana juke joint… When asked about the Flutterbies inspiration, Mo, laughing, searches for the words to describe the bands influence and unique sound. "Heartache and sex…"

The full article is readable online here.

Thanks, Kareem!

The Future is Now

From the stranger-than-fiction file… Rock n’ Roll Psychic Andrew Brewer interviewed Maureen for the website Blog Talk Radio, and the entire conversation is streamable online! Andrew predicted big success for Mo and the band in 2010-11.

Click here to hear his full Flutterbies forecast. And stay tuned this year to see which predictions come true…

Video Killed the Radio Star: Status Report

The Flutterbies video for our single "How I Get Over You" is approaching 1600 hits on YouTube! If you haven’t seen it, click here to check it out. Deepest thanks to fans and friends for helping us go viral.
