We’ve decided to release them one at a time, a song a month, as digital singles available at iTunes, Amazon, etc. First up is a tune that’s been a live audience favorite the past year, "First Rain of October." A pop country confession about an ex-lover finding happiness with someone new, the track is available now for just 99¢ at all your favorite online retailers! Aside from numerous films and Broadway shows, you know Betty best from Laverne and Shirley and All In the Family. She directed Maureen in "Spoon River Anthology" (with Lee Meriwether, Bridget Hanley and Jim Beaver). Betty passed away February 12, 2011. We will miss her so very much.

The Flutterbies newsletter June 2010

Tuesday, June 8th, 2010

Hey Gang! Our Cooldog East Coast Tour was a hoot and a holler 🙂  We’re editing videos and live audio for your enjoyment and a collectible CD.  We will have links at www.theflutterbies.com very soon….

GIGS:

TUESDAY JUNE 15TH – 9:15PM
THE STRONGHOLD

1623 Abbott Kinney Blvd – Full band electric set with Maureen Davis, Adam Daniel, Christopher Allis, Steve Whalen and special guest Marty Rifkin on pedal steel
We’ll be opening for the incredible Chris Joyner (a sometimes Flutterby as well!)
Full gig info is always posted and current at our website’s Shows page.

HIGHLIGHTS FROM THE COOLDOG TOUR:

National Underground in NYC — we bookended our tour with 2 performances at Gavin Degraw’s main room on Houston Street in the infamous East Village.  The first night our pal Heidi brought the cast of Broadway’s “Mama Mia”!  The last night, we took the Double Happiness bus (that just sounds nasty) from Delaware to NYC, Oliva Restaurant manager Ramon gave me homemade Mama Juana (rum & honey) to warm my voice and we closed out our tour with college buddies in tow. I ended up roaming the East Village until 3AM,  got stuck in Tomkins Square Park and had to hop a five foot fence in dress/cowboy boots.  Yeah — I’m badass.  Hee.

The Delaware Friends of Folk Memorial Singer Songwriter Circle – Dover, DE — glorious chapel benefit concert at Wesely College – stained glass and vaulted ceilings carried the sound up and away… Adam played killed on a solo of “hallelujah” on grand piano — it was a church, right?

Cooldog Concert – Smyrna, DE — the gig that inspired the tour!  Paul Gumerman booked us at Cooldog and hooked us up with Helen Downing from Group E who planned the rest of the tour. Dan Navarro was in town, so we invited him to play too!  SRO house, killer BBQ, Nothin’ But Trouble Band backing us and those awesome dancing dogs — not to mention a duet w/Dan Navarro on “We Belong”. Who could ask for more?  You can buy a live concert CD of both our sets for $20 by writing maureen@theflutterbies.com

The Flutterbies with Dan Navarro

The Flutterbies at Cooldog

Bike Night @ Trader Lee’s in Ocean City, MD – Bourbon with bikers and a Classic Rock jam session where we joined in on Metallica, Starship & Zeppelin songs. Special thanks to Ocean 98.1 (www.irieradio.com) for the awesome 1 -hour interview & airplay/video streaming — We love DJ B.K.!

MANY MANY THANKS TO:  other wonderful tour nightclubs Frazier’s and the sweet, homey, Golden Fleece; George Dash & Tom Moran for posters/postcards and hospitality; Melinda Hall for lodging and concierge; Helen Downing @ Group E for keepin’ us busy and Paul Gumerman & son Tai at Cooldog Camp for Wayward Musicians for hosting The Flutterbies an entire week.

PRESS:

Ol’ Skool Rods, May 2010 lauds “…It is true what they say about lead singer Maureen Davis’ voice — smooth as glass and just as sharp…whose expansive vocal range and oil-well depth truly brings the always thoughtful, often poignant lyrics to a steaming, blistery boil. Davis can belt out a sultry sadness or rage that leaves one’s soul black and bluesy….” (By the way, our CD cover artist Jim Owens has a regular feature called “Rodz Noir” in this retro mag.  Dig it!)

Craig Horleman @ the Deleware State News gave us a great full-page feature writeup! Click here to read it.

See you at Stronghold June 15th!

Hey, y’all! Welcome to The Flutterbies March newsletter. Keywords this month: heartache and sex.

Joonbug

This month The Flutterbies are featured at Joonbug, the ‘net’s coolest new nightlife/culture website. Kareem Anderson interviewed Maureen and wrote a stellar review of our EP The Flutterbies featuring Maureen Davis. Here’s a snippet:

…the Flutterbies sound can best be described as Bonnie Raitt on a blind date with Beck while being served a shot of Southern Comfort by Janis Joplin in a Louisiana juke joint… When asked about the Flutterbies inspiration, Mo, laughing, searches for the words to describe the bands influence and unique sound. "Heartache and sex…"

The full article is readable online here.

Thanks, Kareem!

The Future is Now

From the stranger-than-fiction file… Rock n’ Roll Psychic Andrew Brewer interviewed Maureen for the website Blog Talk Radio, and the entire conversation is streamable online! Andrew predicted big success for Mo and the band in 2010-11.

Birthday at the Bistro

We celebrated Maureen’s birthday November 2nd with a private industry showcase at Ivan Kane’s Cafe Wa s in Hollywood, CA. The evening was produced by Black Sand Music, who recently signed The Flutterbies for TV, film, advertisement, and video game placement. After an opening set by Shane Alexander, The Flutterbies rocked the bistro… and then the bistro rocked Maureen: everyone in attendence sang her happy birthday.

It’s good to be queen.

The Flutterbies would like to thank everyone who contributed to our spectacular evening: our sound man, Holder; Lana, Ivan, Suzie, and Alex at Cafe Wa s; lovely leather-clad Lynda Kay for her invaluable assistance; our manager, Keith C. Anderson; our licensing agent, Josh Sanderson; and, of course of course, our enthusiastic audience!

Put Another Dime in the Jukebox, Baby, continued

Even Bad Girls Drink Tea, continued

In last month’s newsletter we asked this question: What do Maureen’s photo series Even Bad Girls Drink Tea, Algabar Loose Leaf Tea, and The Flutterbies single "Hummingbird Heart" have in common?

This month: the exciting answer!

Some weeks back, Gail at Algabar Tea was cooking up a new custom blend. As she was working, our single "Hummingbird Heart" apparently came into her mind, so she decided to name the tea just that: Hummingbird Heart. No confirmed release date yet, but the tea will be available both at The Flutterbies shows and online, where it will come packaged with a free download of our single "Hummingbird Heart"! Meanwhile, Maureen’s Even Bad Girls Drink Tea photo session last month is becoming a coffee table book, spotlighting some of Hollywood’s hottest upcoming fashion designers, hairstylists, makeup artists, and models. The book, our song, and Algabar’s tea will continue to intersect in wild, wonderful ways as we approach the holiday gift-giving season…

Video Killed the Radio Star, continued

The Flutterbies video for our next single "How I Get Over You" is being edited as we speak! And the footage looks great. Stay tuned, stay tuned, stay tuned…

Reviews

This month’s review comes from columnist James Hames, from the online newspaper My Daily Find. James caught our August gig at Kulak’s Woodshed in North Hollywood, CA and had this to say:

The showpiece of the night was Davis under the umbrella of The Flutterbies (pronounced like a Spoonerism of butterflies). The solid songs include the engaging “Hummingbird Heart”— a song being lent to efforts to overturn Prop. 8 — and “Damn Glad,” a song that navigates the paradox of “Will I regret saying ‘good riddance’?” She travels that big-voiced Alannah Myles road with a more nuanced country feeling in the sound.

A full review of the evening, which also included solo sets by The Flutterbies’ guitarists Adam Daniel and Bart Ryan, is readable online here.

Thank you, James!

The Flutterbies August news

Tuesday, August 4th, 2009

Hey, y’all! Welcome to The Flutterbies August newsletter… This month: some exciting retail news, new pics and video for you, and more!

The Flutterbies On Sale at Amoeba Records

The last great record store! We’re pleased as punch to be on sale now at Amoeba Records in Hollywood, CA. Our EP The Flutterbies featuring Maureen Davis is shelved atop Ben Folds Five and Peter Frampton, and this month it’s also a featured pick at Amoeba’s website! We’re working on booking an in-store performance this fall, so if you’re in the neighborhood, please stop by the store, grab a CD, and ask when we’re playing!

In-Flight Flutterbies

Our single "Hummingbird Heart" is in regular rotation on Lufthansa Airlines’ Country/Folk/Americana channel. So should any of you be flying to or from Germany this month, you can tune into us on your in-flight radio!

We’re worldwide, baby.

New Pic, and Video… with Trombone!

The Flutterbies live! Pic taken by Chef Dion Trujillo at our summer residency "First Tuesdays" show last month at O’Brien’s Pub in Santa Monica, CA. Later that evening, our guitarist Adam Daniel began hurriedly packing up the Les Paul sitting on a stand in the center of the photo before it was kindly pointed out to him that the guitar, in fact, belonged to Brant Biles, soundman extraordinaire and rhythm guitarist for Bart Ryan, also on the bill that night. Alt-country outlaw, indeed…

And from the same show, click here to see video of the Flutterbies’ new friend Nick "Danger" Daley jamming improbably amazing trombone along with our new song "Shoot Me". Yes: trombone.

Video Killed the Radio Star

The Flutterbies are filming our first video, for our next single "How I Get Over You". The video will co-star our good friend Mindy Sterling from the Austin Powers movies, and S-Factor pole dancers Tracy Mueller and Christina Grance. Produced and directed by Dan Zacharias, the video will be shot August 28 at The Good Nite Bar in North Hollywood, CA. Thanks to owner/bartender Daniel for gifting us with his amazing room! Stay tuned…

Reviews

This month’s review snippet comes from a fan posting at the Independent Music Awards website. We’re nominated for this year’s awards, and received this exciting and eloquent comment from NYC journalist Tammy Quinn McKillip:

The Flutterbies are city slicker country twang, urban hillbilly, rock-n-ride amazing! Maureen Davis has the voice of an angel and a body made for sin. Sexy, soulful and intelligent, the Flutterbies are everything that alternative country should be–down to Earth and transcendent.

Thanks, Tammy!
